MVA is designed to produce an extremely high level of productive and healthy competition amongst service members who perform the duties of a Public Affairs Specialist, Mass Communication Specialists, Combat Camera Man/Woman, PAO, Photographer or Photojournalist. MVA parallels the Department of Defense VIAP award competition. The MVAs will conclude prior to the start of each individual services photo competitions allowing service members the opportunity to refine their selections for the DoD VIAP contest. Feedback provided by MVA judges will serve as great training for service members across the DoD and will hopefully inspire those same service members to submit their work for other military competitions.

In addition, this contest helps further solidify the fact that military photojournalists are professionals and produce quality work that is in line with industry standards. MVA highlights the fact that military photojournalists are capable of producing the same quality of work as civilian photojournalists.

MVA is intended to directly uphold the highest quality of military photojournalism while sustaining the credibility of all military photojournalists.
